Abrantes in
Central Portugal is not only a
city, but a municipality covering 19 parishes. The origins of
Abrantes are evident from its strategic position where the Ribatejo, Alto Alentejo and Beira Baixa regions cross and blend with each other.
The city was founded in the 12th century to help defend conquered territories,
though there had been settlements there from as early as 300bc.
The castle is perched atop the hill upon which the city
clings to above the
Rio Tejo (River Tagus), provides a remarkable 360 degree panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.
Abrantes was awarded city status on 14th June 1916 and has flourished since then.
A lively celebration is held each year to commemorate this city status,
which is a public holiday. |

Abrantes
is divided in two with the historic centre, a maze of
narrow cobbled streets, lined with whitewashed
traditional houses and sun drenched 'praças' (squares).
The new town of Abrantes nestles at the base of the hill
top and is an ever growing collection of apartment
buildings, commercial and retail outlets. |
