Portugal can get hot during the spring and summer months and you may be tempted to install air conditioning units to help keep your house cool.

But did you know air conditioning units in Portugal can be an effective way to take the chill off a room during the winter?

Most air conditioning units in Portugal  provide both hot and cold options ensuring you can utilise the unit all year round. Air conditioning can be less expensive to install than other forms of heating, though you will have to factor the cost per unit against the number of rooms. If a room has a large capacity or area you may need to have two units installed to ensure the equipment can adequately cool or heat the space.

It is believed the principles behind air conditioning was utilised by the Romans in Rome with cool waters from aqueducts being circulated through the walls of houses. Today air conditioning units are a little more advanced and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Wall mounted air conditioning units are quite common in Portugal, especially within apartments where other forms of heating and cooling are not possible. Once the control unit has been installed, to the interior of the property, then the condenser unit must be sited to the exterior. Sometimes when sited to the front of properties these condenser units can appear ugly.

Care should be taken when thinking of installing air conditioning about the siting of the condenser units as they can be ugly mounted on the front of your home as well as being noisy when running.

Unfortunately as efficient as air conditioning units are in cooling and heating a room, they do need maintenance to ensure micro-bacteria doesn't begin growing in the condenser.

However you can purchase portable air conditioning units which have their own built in condenser and can be moved from room to room. Though you will have to check and dispose of any water deposits in the condenser system to ensure you don't have a flood.

Air conditioning units vary in price, however a good quality wall mounted system is around 500€ plus fitting. However you will have to be guided by a specialist as to the cubic capacity of the room to ensure the system is capably of cooling and heating it sufficiently.
