Situated
adjacent to the Rio Alvor, the town of
Alvor on
the western
Algarve
region of Portugal, was once a simple fishing village
until tourists descended on the most southerly region of
the country.
Since
the late 1960s tourists from all over the world have
flocked to
Alvor
and although the town still has a small
fishing fleet the boats are mainly found on the western
end of the Praia de Alvor,
the town's main arc-shaped beach.

|
Much of
the Moorish village of
Alvor
was destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon
earthquake, the town still retains it's charm with the
variety of villas, urbanisations and apartment blocks
spanning out from the cobbled centre staying low rise.
Aside
from the riverfront, which has undergone a programme of
gentrification of late providing tourists with a variety
of places to eat, drink and soak up the atmosphere,
Alvor's
main attraction to the thousands of
families who visit each year, has to be it's large,
arc-shaped beach, the Praia de Alvor. |

Alvor
has a
pretty old town with narrow cobbled streets meandering
back from the river and beach. There are a wide variety
of shops selling both souvenirs and traditional crafts
as well as the prerequisite buckets and spades,
essential for a good family holiday.
However
Alvor
is not only popular with families with
young children, but with golfers, who make a bee-line to
the town.
Alvor
boasts three top class courses all within
the town's perimeter. |
