Ansião in
Central Portugal
is a typical rural town with narrow cobbled streets and
a weekly market.
Ansião, around 40 minutes south of the
impressive city of
Coimbra, is nestled behind the Serra
da Alvaiázere and is home to around 2,549 inhabitants.
As well as being a town,
Ansião is also a district and has five sub regions -
Alvorge, Avelar, Chão de Chouce, Lagateira, Pousaflores,
Santiago da Guarda and Torres de Vales de Torres.
Ansião is a relatively
small market town with a variety of independent shops in
the narrow cobbled streets surrounding the main focal
square. Over the past 30 years the younger population
has migrated to the larger cities in search of work and
therefore there is an older population. In recent years
the town's council have battled hard to obtain money
from the European Union to encourage new investment and
promote jobs within the area. To date Ansião's most
prolific industry is agriculture and as such shops and
facilities within the region lean towards this industry. |
