Armação de Pêra was, like many of the
resorts on the
Algarve, just a
small fishing village half a century ago.
Today
Armação de Pêra, located in the
western
Algarve
region of
Portugal, is a
concrete jungle of high rise hotels and apartment
blocks, built to accommodate the thousands of holiday
makers, who descend each year for their annual vacations
to enjoy the sun and sandy beaches, which made the place
popular. |
|
Armação de Pêra does have an historic
centre, though this can be difficult to find among the
high rise buildings. Although there are sign posts
points towards 'centro' they do tend to tail off
and you can end up missing the original heart of the
town.
The main
focus though for visitors to
Armação de Pêra is it's fantastic
beach, which it is reputed to be one of the largest on
the Algarve. Recent renovations have updated the cobbled
promenade which allows visitors to stroll the length of
the resort with ease, shaded by at least one or two
palms.
There
are plenty of places to eat at
Armação de Pêra, though if you visit
in the low season you may find some of these
establishments closed though no doubt you will be able
to find a 'toasta mixta' at one of the many cafes
serving the local residents. |

If you want to get
away from the hurly burly of resort life in
Armação de Pêra
the neighbouring beach of Praia da Senhora da Rocha
(Beach of Our Lady of the Rock), three kilometres away
makes an ideal get away.
Set between russet
coloured cliffs this small cove beach allows visitors to
witness traditional Portuguese fishermen at work. Boats,
nets and creels are stacked on the beach with the
fishermen, when not at sea, sheltering in their shacks
set against the cliffs.
It can be quite a hike
if you are on foot to reach the beach, from the cliffs
above, but you can reward yourself with refreshments
from the cafe and restaurant on arrival.
Before descending to
the beach it is well worth walking down to the
whitewashed 16th century chapel, Ermida de Nossa
Senhora, situated on a promontory overlooking the cove.
The views back along the coast towards
Armação de Pêra
and down to the cove are spectacular on a clear, sunny
day.

makes a good base for holidays being quite central to a
