Beaches in Portugal There is one thing Portugal has a lot of, and that's beaches. Although a relatively small country, there is over 832 kilometres of coastline with some stunning sandy beaches to enjoy throughout the country.

Though you may think a beach holiday can only be taken in the most southerly region of Portugal, the Algarve, you would be wrong. Portugal also has some stunning beaches on the Blue, Green and Silver Coasts (Costa Azul, Costa Verde and Costa Prata).

Portugal has (as of 2011) 271 Blue Flag beaches, all of which have life guards operating during the height of the season providing peace of mind when you are paddling with your young ones in the Atlantic surf.

During the height of the holiday season in Portugal - the middle two weeks of August - the larger and more popular beaches up and down the country can become very busy and it can be hard to find a spare patch of sand to lay your towel.

Taking a day out at the beach is a popular past time for many Portuguese families and therefore if you are visiting Portugal during this busy period be prepared to bask in the sun in close proximity to thousands of others, who all have the same idea.

However if shimming up to thousands of other scantily clad, oiled bodies is not to you're liking and you're prepared to explore a little you're bound to find a secluded cove or bay. Portugal has so many beaches up and down the country it won't be hard to find somewhere a little less busy to lay your towel to soak up the sun. Though you will have to watch out when in the water as most of these smaller beaches and coves don't have lifeguards patrolling.
