How to Get Connected to Mains Electricity in Portugal

Building works electricity in Portugal is a supply provided by the electricity company EDP (Energias de Portugal) on a temporary basis to ensure the construction or reconstruction works can be completed.

As with domestic electricity a contract is made with the owner of the property, however this is a temporary contract, usually the length of the Building Licence which has been issued by the council.

The builder will install a large, temporary electricity metre box, bolted to the front of the ruined building, or on frame at the front of the property. If you are looking at purchasing a property and it has one of these boxes you will know immediately the property only has a temporary supply, which can be switched off at the end of the license period.

If an agent or owner of a property you are interested in purchasing says he can give some one a call at the electricity company to get you connected, for a few hundred euros, please note although you may think this is normal, it is not. In order to have building works electricity supply EDP will want to see a licence of works which you can only obtain after having planning permission approved.
