This
difference in price is not just limited to brand new
cars. Even second hand and previously owned cars are
vastly more expensive than their UK counterparts.
You may
have thought a healthy car buying budget of 10,000€
would be sufficient
to purchase a suitable and reliable new run-around in
Portugal, as it is in the UK. However don't be surprised
to find yourself directed to the used car section
instead of the swanky showroom when you visit a car
dealership in Portugal.
Unfortunately in
Portugal although 10,000€ is a great
deal of money, it still is only enough to stretch to a
well-used car; perhaps a six year old Mercedes with two
previous owners and a few hundred thousand kilometres on
the odometer.
Though
you may be reeling from the shock of car prices in
Portugal
at the moment, it may provide a little comfort
to know cars in Portugal do tend to retain their value
following their initial purchase depreciation.
You can
of course find second hand cars in
Portugal for much
less than 10,000€, though you will be looking at
vehicles which are perhaps 10-20 years old and a little
less reliable with parts past their best. So having a
basic knowledge of what goes on under a bonnet or a
friend who knows will be very handy when you're out and
about looking for a car to purchase.
There
are second-hand car dealers in just about every town in
Portugal
and quite a few online sites where you can
search for your car of choice, though most of these are
in Portuguese so learning a few phrases before you start
your purchase will be an advantage. |
