The city
of
Caldas da Rainha
on the
Silver Coast of
Portugal
was but a foul smelling spring when Queen Leonor
of Portugal passed by on the way from Batalha to Óbidos
in 1485.
It is said she bathed in
the spring's water and finding her afflictions eased,
ordered the construction of a hospital at the site. The
hospital, Hospital Termal Rainha D. Leonor, is
still in operation today and is the oldest establishment
of it's kind in the world today.
In it's prime the hospital
and springs attracted thousands every year to bathe and
take advantage of their medicinal
properties. Today
Caldas da Rainha,
which literally translates to Hot Springs of the Queen,
is still popular with tourists from all over the world.
However today's visitors are more inclined to take
advantage of the city's proximity to
some of the best beaches on the
Silver Coast. |
