Capela Sao Lourenco Tomar

The Capela Sao Lourenço (Chapel of St Lourenço) is situated on the outskirts of Tomar, central Portugal. The chapel was constructed in the 16th century.

The chapel was built under the orders of King Manuel to commemorate the meeting of the armies of Nuno Álvares Pereira and the Master of Avis before the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. The decorative, hand painted tiled freeze on the exterior facade of the chapel depicts this meeting.

The chapel was built in the name of Sao Lourenço as the date of the meeting was 10 August, the saint's martyr day. Adjacent to the chapel (now divided by the EN110 road) is the Fonte de São Lourenço. The chapel was designated a national monument in 1921.
