When you purchase a
property in the United Kingdom it is common practice to commission a
survey of the property using a chartered surveyor. Indeed most, if
not all, mortgage lenders in the UK insist on having a survey
completed before a sale can be processed.
In Portugal things
are slightly different. Most Portuguese people do not use chartered
surveyors and purchase properties without having any in depth
studies carried out on them. Generally if a mortgage is proposed for
a restored property most banks will instruct an engineer to carry
out a survey, though these are not as in-depth as those in the UK.
Having said this
there are chartered surveyors in Portugal and should you want to
commission a survey this is possible. They will assess the property
and give you a written report, however this will most likely be in
Portuguese.
If you are
considering purchasing a property and would like advice on the cost
of renovations and repairs required before buying it sometimes is a
good idea to find a reputable builder and his engineer. They could
assess the property and give in real terms a report of the work
required and an estimate of the costs to carry out these repairs. |
