forget you will need
crockery, cutlery, bed linen, towels not to mention
garden furniture so you can relax and enjoy the long,
hot summers here in
Portugal in your new home.
There are many
large retail outlets in
Portugal, much like the United
Kingdom, offering a range of furnishings for every room
of your home. However the majority of these companies
are based in and around large conurbations like
Lisbon,
Porto and
Coimbra.
In less urbanised areas there are still
large shopping outlets, however many only offer free
delivery within a close radius of their premises. In
addition to these larger, chains there are many smaller
'boutique' style shops selling a range of different
styles of furniture from traditional rustic pieces
through to modern contemporary.
If you are looking to furnish your
property on a budget it is worth while taking a look at
some of the second hand or previously owned furniture shops, which are
located within the
central Portugal region.
These shops offer a range of different
furnishings including sofas, coffee tables, dining
tables, chairs, ornate side boards and wardrobes. These
shops tend not to deal with beds or soft furnishings.
Light Fitments in
Portugal
Most new build
properties here in
Portugal are finished without light
fitments installed, simply to give you the chance to
chose the style of lighting yourself. In older
properties you may find the previous owners remove all
light fitments before they leave and it is best to
double check with both your agent and the owner what
fixtures and fittings are remaining with the property.
White Goods in Portugal
If you are moving lock stock and barrel
to
Portugal there are many electrical items which you
can bring with you. Although the power supply is
different the investment of a few adapters could save
you a few hundred euros.
There are some differences though in a
few electrical items, one of which is the washing
machine or 'maquina de lava roupa'. Washing machines in
Portugal only have a cold water feed and use an internal
element to heat the water. So if you are bringing your
own washing machine from Britain check out your water
supply where you are fitting the machine to ensure you
can install a secondary pipe for hot water feed.
Garden Furniture in Portugal
A property in Portugal is probably not
complete without some garden furniture. After all you
will probably be spending a good deal of time in the
open air, enjoying the sunshine, therefore garden
furniture should be one of the items at the top of your
'to get' list. There are a variety of types of exterior
furniture available here in
Portugal
to suit everyone's
tastes and budgets. But before you spend any money it is
best to take a little time choosing the right furniture.
Remember in summer here in
Portugal it
can get hot and if you opt for metal framed furniture
you and your guests may find the chairs a little hot to
sit on. Wooden furniture is a good option, but bleaches
quickly under the sun and will need maintenance. Plastic furniture may not be the chicest,
however it does stand the test of the sun and is one of
the most inexpensive options around. |
