Why Travel Insurance?
Many people deeply regret not taking out
travel insurance. They think their credit card accident
cover or European Health Card is sufficient.
It is not!
THE
EHIC CARD
is no substitute for travel insurance and you won’t
necessarily be covered for all medical costs, nor will
it cover the cost of relatives flying out (and back),
their accommodation, or the money it will cost to get
you back home when you are fit to travel.
The cost of a decent travel insurance
policy is usually quite low, especially when compared to
the real cost when things go wrong.
Typical Costs
No matter how
careful you are, things can go wrong on holiday. Your
luggage or Passport could be lost or stolen, you might
become ill and need to return home in a hurry. Traveling
without adequate travel insurance may be costly.
Examples of the average claim for various situations are
around £750 for cancellation or curtailment, £2,000 for
legal expenses, £100 loss of passport. The cost of
Medical Expenses varies considerably throughout the
world, but expect between £400 & £1,000 for a simple
case of gastroenteritis. So make sure you are properly
insured.
Getting back home in the
event of an emergency isn’t cheap without insurance.
Typical costs are:
°
£30–35,000: Air ambulance
from US east coast to Portugal.
°
£15–20,000: Economy-class
flights, with medical escort, from Australia.
°
£9–12,000: Scheduled
club-class flight with nurse escort from west coast of
USA..
°
£1800–4000: Scheduled flight, seated economy with doctor
escort from European destinations.
Apart from providing cover for 24 hour
emergency assistance and medical expenses, you should
consider the enormous cost of getting you home.
Cancellation or Curtailment (cutting short your trip)
Lost & stolen possessions, Travel Delay, Missed
Departure. Personal Liability in case you are sued for
causing injury or damaging property. Financial
protection if your airline goes bust before or during
your trip.
With good comprehensive
Annual Multi Trip Travel Insurance costing as little as
52€ and Single Trip cover from just 11€, it just doesn’t
make sense to takes chances.
Scheduled Airline Failure
- Make sure you are covered
60 airlines have collapsed in the last 12
months and it has been estimated that a further 40 will
go bust over the next two years.

Case Study
A traveler
suffering from cancer correctly completed an EHIC form
which she took on her travels abroad. Unfortunately she
suffered an illness that was unrelated to her cancer and
was admitted to hospital for 11 days, while a member of
her group remained behind to keep her company. She was
evacuated back to the UK in an Air Ambulance. Her EHIC
form did not cover the costs and because she had no
insurance it cost her family £6,600.
