	The Algarve International Sand Sculpting Festival is reputed to be the largest in the world and has been running since 2003. The sand festival, which is visited by thousands each year, is a sight to behold and makes for an interesting day out with the family. The festival is held at the small inland village of Pêra on the *Algarve.* The festival runs from 9th April (2011) throughout the summer and into the autumn until 15th October (2011).
Each year there is a theme and this year (2011) it is the Animal Kingdom, so expect to see some life sized beasts prowling across the sands. Sand artists from around the world will sculpt more than 35 tonnes of sand into a variety of enormous statues across an area measuring 15,000 square metres. Unlike other years the International Sand Sculpting Festival in 2011 will be open to the public from 9th April allowing visitors to watch the actual process involved in creating these lavish statues. The festival, which is open daily, runs until 15th October with tickets costing 4.50€ for children aged between 6 and 12 years; 8€ for adults, under fives and over 65s are free.
