Jose
Saramago was a popular fiction writer in Portugal, who
in 1998 won the Nobel Prize for Literature. His works,
which have been translated into more than 40 languages,
were a combination of poetry, fiction, short stories and
novels.
Saramago, who was born in the picturesque village of
Azinhaga (voted the most Portuguese village in
Portugal), in central Portugal, in 1922. After a varied
career which included time spent as a car mechanic
Saramago found his niche as as journalist.
However
despite writing over 29 books and winning a Nobel Prize
for Literature Jose was virtually unknown outside of
Portugal. Saramago died in Spain in 2010 and such was
the respect for this author over 20,000 attended his
funeral including the president of the republic, Anibal
Cavaco Silva. |
