Marinha
Grande on
Portugal's Silver Coast is not only a town but
a municipality and has around 30,000 inhabitants. The
town itself is made up of three district - Vieira de
Leiria, Marinha Grande, and Moita.
The town is situated among a pine
forest, known as the Pinhal de Leiria, which was planted
nearly 700 years ago. The Leiria pine forest was planted
at the bequest of the then king, Dom Alfonso III, who
intended building a huge fleet of ships but changed his
mind. The Pinhal de Leiria spans almost 100 square
kilometres.
The town of
Marinha Grande is famous
for it's crystal ware and there are museums within the
town which are dedicated to the industry. |
