Mouchao Tomar Drink

If you have visited Tomar in central Portugal on holiday or live in and around this historic town then you will no doubt have heard of Mouchão. Perhaps you have seen some of the posters displayed in the various cafes and restaurants throughout the old and new parts of the town? But have you tried it?

If you have then you will know you've sampled something special. The drink, which was created in the 1970s by a Tomarense family, has a large following. The popular aperitif is delivered by hand to the various cafes, bars and restaurants which stock it, each week by a member of the family

Despite the new tough EU labelling laws which insist on every ingredient being listed, the recipe for Mouchão has remained a tightly guarded secrete.

Originally Mouchão was only sold at it's creator's adega, adjacent to the Parque Mouchão, hence the name. However following a devastating fire in the early 1990s, production of the slightly alcoholic beverage ceased.

However after popular demand from the masses the family began production again and Mouchão is back on the menu. Sold only by the bottle, it is a refreshing blend of herbs, fruit juice and vodka, best served chilled, to be enjoyed with friends on a warm summer's evening.
