If you've already bought a property in Portugal and are in the process of planning your move to Portugal, then take a look at our helpful checklist to help take the stress out of this life changing event, after all moving house is said to be one of the most stressful events you can undertake.

Two months before you move to Portugal

If you will use a mover, get a few estimates from moving companies.
If you will move yourself, get costs from at least two truck rental companies.
Create a floor plan of your new home for furniture and appliance placement.
Make an inventory of your household goods and begin to remove clutter (start with the basement, attic, garage, and other storage areas).
Start a file for all your moving paperwork (estimates, receipts, etc.).
Arrange to transfer school records.

One Month Before you move to Portugal

Start a moving expense book.
Ask for references from at least two moving companies and get written estimates. Make sure the movers know all the items which are to be included. Do not include jewellery or other small valuables. Ask for a copy of the mover's insurance and compare it with your existing coverage.
Get a written commitment from the moving company that specifies the date of the move and arrival.
Contact the provincial health authorities for the province you are moving out of and the one you are moving into. If moving within the same province notify them of your change of address.
Resign from any clubs or organizations that are not active in your new community.
Cancel newspaper and magazine subscriptions or change address.
Begin mailing your change of address cards. Keep a list of cards sent. Don't forget to notify all credit card companies.
Gather all important documents including your pets'.
Start using foods and cleaning supplies that cannot be moved.
Schedule disconnection of all utility services at your old home, and connection of them at your new one. Be sure to disconnect the day after you leave and connect the day before you arrive. If you have "last month" deposits with services, such as the telephone company, request your refund.
If you are packing yourself, obtain packing materials and start packing items you won't need until after you arrive at your new house.
Check with your insurance company to see how your possessions are covered during transit.
Arrange for special transportation of your pets and plants if necessary.

Two Weeks Before you move to Portugal

Have a garage sale and get rid of all the junk.
Start packing. Number and mark contents of boxes. Keep an inventory list and make two copies for each box. Keep one with your inventory list and put the other inside each box. Seal boxes.
Return all borrowed items and collect what you've loaned ie library books.
Transfer prescriptions and be sure you have an adequate supply of medications on hand.
Assemble a file folder of information to leave for the new owner of your home.
Pack a travel kit:
Put aside critical items like a cheque book, credit cards, personal phone book, ID, flashlight, keys, toiletries, tools, paper plates, cups, towels, travel alarm clock, aspirin, bandages and games for the kids. Also, pack a suitcase with clothing and other personal items.

Service your car in preparation for the move.

Moving Day to Portugal

Note all utility meter readings.
