Moving to Portugal

Moving is said to be one of the three most stressful events we do in our lives. If you add moving to a foreign country it could seem like a very daunting task.

However armed with the right information and good planning relocating to Portugal  could be easier than you think.

A recent survey revealed 5,000 Britons a week moved abroad permanently during 2005 and the number is on the increase. Already over 50,000 Britons have made the move to Portugal and are enjoying the benefits the country has to offer - lower cost of living, more temperate climate, relatively low crime rate and beautiful scenery.

It is little wonder more and more people are thinking of relocating to Portugal. The country has much to offer, however if you are thinking of beginning a new life in Portugal, it is best to ensure you check out all the facts first to smooth the transition.

Learning the Portuguese language is important even if you are retiring to Portugal and don't intend working. Although the younger generation of Portuguese are now learning English as a second language in most schools, it is essential you arm yourself with a working knowledge of the Portuguese language.

If you are intending to move to Portugal and seek employment, take into consideration, although the overall cost of living is cheaper than that in the United Kingdom, so are wages. More information on employment in Portugal.

If you are planning to retire to Portugal, think carefully about the location of the property you purchase. Although a remote property, set on a mountain side, may be idyllic in the spring and summer. Will it have the same appeal in the autumn and winter when the weather isn't as good. You don't want to feel 'cut off', especially if you or your partner should become ill.

Issues such as the location of the nearest hospital, health centre and airport, are important considerations to take into account when purchasing a property abroad just as much as the property itself.

Many people have made the mistake of purchasing properties without considering location fully and end up moving shortly after. Take your time and discover the areas of Portugal before rushing into to a property purchase. It is always advisable to rent first, if possible, to get to know the area.
