In
little over a 100 years
Praia da Rocha
in the central
Algarve
region of Portugal has turned from a
small fishing village into a burgeoning resort
attracting thousands of tourists every year from around
the world.
Since
the first hotel, Hotel Viola, opened it's doors
at the turn of the 20th century the appearance of the
resort has altered dramatically. Where once there were
single storey dwellings lining the russet coloured
cliffs above the sandy beaches, now there are high rise
hotels and apartment buildings. |
|
Situated
only five minutes south of
Portimão, the
main avenue of
Praia da Rocha,
Avenida Tomas Cabreira, is lined with cafes,
restaurants, bars and souvenir shops. There are steps
set into the rocky cliffs which lead down to the beaches
below where there are more bars and restaurants in
unusual, space-age wooden units.
Redevelopment several years ago saw restricted car
access to Avenida Tomas Cabreira ensuring party-going
holiday makers can hop from bar to bar with out worrying
about on coming traffic.
Although
Praia da Rocha
has been developed to within an inch of it's life, there are one
or two historical monuments remaining including the
Forteleza Santa Catarina. The fort, which dates back to
the 17th century is located at the western end of Tomas
Cabreira and was constructed to help protect the estuary
of the Rio Arade. |

It's central location
on the
Algarve
ensures nothing is too far away and
there is definitely something for everyone to do for all
ages. For families with young children, or those who
like a little adventure, there are several water and
theme parks within a short drive of
Praia da Rocha.
Golfers can get a
swing in at a variety of top class golf courses nearby.
Though if you prefer something more sedate there are
always the boat trips to see the caves and grottoes
along the coast. Alternatively take a boat ride up the
Rio Arade to the inland town of Silves.
Praia da Rocha
is around 70 kilometres from the international airport
at
Faro
and although
does not have it's own train station, there is one at
neighbouring Portimão. Buses from Praia da Rocha to
Portimão every 15 to 30 minutes |
