Over the past 20 years renting a self catering property while you are holidaying abroad or looking for your dream home in the sun has become a more popular option for many.

Renting a property can be a more cost effective option than staying in a hotel or guest house when holidaying in central Portugal. Not only will it give you the opportunity to experience the region more fully by visiting supermarkets and the local shops to stock the kitchen, it is a chance to interact with the locals.

And there are a variety of self catering holiday cottages and houses available for rent within the central Portugal region to suit everyone's tastes, budgets and desired locations from one bedroom mill cottages through to luxury lakeside villas.

Generally renting a property over a longer period of time will work out cheaper than letting a holiday cottage or house. Many property owners look at a longer term rental as a more secure income and therefore the rates are adjusted.

If however you are looking to purchase a property in central Portugal and wish to rent a property on a medium to long term basis it is prudent to note, while there are a number of properties available, they do not stay on the market for any length of time as there is not only a demand from overseas renters, but from the local market.

You may also find it more difficult to find a rental property if you are intent on bringing your pets with you. There are few cultural differences in attitudes towards cats and dogs. In more rural areas of Portugal cats and dogs are not seen as domestic animals. Cats will keep the rodent popular down and find a warm place to sleep, dogs are usually chained up on the perimeter of a property to guard the house.

Very few property owners will consider having cats and dogs inside their houses, though attitudes are changing slowly, having your pets with you may make you property search a little harder.

Unfurnished Property for Rent in Central Portugal

If you wish to move to central Portugal and rent an unfurnished property for a long period of time it is prudent to note it is best not to assume the term 'unfurnished' means no furniture. In some cases 'unfurnished' will also mean the property will not have light fittings and a hot water heater installed.

Once you have viewed a property and determined you wish to rent it, double check with the agent or owner exactly what will be installed within the property to ensure there are no misunderstandings.

Deposits on Medium to Long Term Rental Property

In Portugal when you enter into a rental contract for a property the agreement will state a period of five years. However don't worry unduly, in the contract it will also state to you will only need to give one months' notice should you wish to leave. The landlord will also only need to give one months' notice to cancel a contract.

When entering into a rental contract in Portugal you will be asked for two months' rent up front, which is the first and the last months' rent. So if you do decide to leave a property and have given your months' notice your final month has already been paid.
