Quarteira situated situated on the central Algarve region of Portugal is another former fishing village which has grown into popular tourist resort.

A medley of high rise apartment buildings and hotels loom above the wide sandy beaches, which make Quarteira so popular with the thousands of tourists who visit each year. Other than these vast beaches there is nothing of real interest at Quarteira though does make a good base to

explore neighbouring towns of Albufeira and Faro as well as some of the many activities on offer close by including golf, horse riding, water parks, go-karting and tennis.

There are a wide variety of restaurants and cafes in Quarteira offering fresh seafood, traditional Portuguese cuisine as well as English and Irish breakfasts and simply choosing where to eat can be the problem.

Situated on the boundary of Quarteira and Vilamoura is the town's fish market, which is worth a visit if only to see the unusual catches of the day. The more adventurous may wish to purchase a few shark steaks to grill up on the barbecue.

High Rise Hotels Wide Sandy Beaches

Quarteira hosts one of the largest open air markets on the Algarve every Wednesday. If you're looking for souvenirs for your trip, or just want an interesting morning out, it's worth a visit. The market is help next door to the bus station on the main thoroughfare  through the town.

Festa de Nossa Senhora Quarteira Centre Flotilla of Boats

Once a year the local fishermen of Quarteira take part in a religious ceremony, which can be enjoyable and entertaining to watch. The Festa da Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem takes place in May and following a parade along the promenade with statues adorned in paper flowers, the fishermen take to the water in their boats, all highly decorated with flowers.

The festival is a religious event and can appear a little sombre on the parade to the fishing boats, however once the flotilla reaches the open water the atmosphere changes and the highly decorated boats make an interesting spectacle as they bob along the coast.
