Registering a Vehicle in Portugal from an EU Country

Should you decide to import your own vehicle into Portugal, whether it is left or right hand drive, from another EU country, you must be able to provide the following information to the Portuguese authorities:

 

Used Vehicles:

Although no import duty is levied on a vehicle imported for personal use the DGRN insist on the following requirements being met:

◊ Tax has been paid in the EU country of origin.

 

◊ The vehicle has belonged to the registered owner for at least six months and the owner was a resident within another EU country for at least 185 days.

 

New Vehicles: Proof of payment on a new vehicle bought in another EU country and proof of a valid foreign registration of the vehicle, otherwise IVA (Value Added Tax) will be levied.
