| On 18th August 1937 the
company of Serviços Municipalizados (SM) was created
with the ideal of providing consumable, water to the
people of Portugal. Only a few short months later in
1938 the first water metre was installed.
However in 1956 SM was
altered to incorporate the provision of electricity and
the company became SMAE (Serviços Municipalizados de
Àgua e Electricidade). In 1985 the company changed it's
name and direction again and is what we presently know
as SMAS (Serviços Municipalizados de Àgua e
Saneamentos).
However
SMAS is not one large company, but many, much smaller
departments of the councils of Portugal. Each council of
Portugal is responsible for the provision, maintenance
and improvement of the supply of mains, piped water.
Therefore there is not one single telephone number for
SMAS or central office, but lots each located in council
buildings across Portugal.
