A great tradition in Portugal is the monthly or weekly country fair. These are fun to visit and offer fresh produce, handicrafts, clothing, toys and antiques etc. all at bargain prices. Market days vary from region to region.
In most of the main towns there is also a permanent municipal market, selling fresh foodstuff daily. Although luxury prices continue to be charged for many basic items, the variety of shopping venues in the Lisbon area is exceptional and should be enjoyed.
Generally normal shop
opening times are from 9am-13.00pm with a two hour break
for lunch, reopening from 15.00pm-19.00pm. The majority
of shops close at 13.00pm on Saturdays and are not open
at all on Sundays or public holidays.
Supermarkets and Commercial Centres usually offer late-night shopping and are open all day on both Saturday and Sunday. Twice yearly sales, regulated by the government, occur in August/September and January/February. |
