However before you
sign on the dotted line with an agent or manufacturer
it is advised you work out exactly the kind of swimming
pool which would suit your needs and budget. A
reasonably sized swimming pool (eight metres by four
metres) can cost as little as 13,500€ to install. If you are
contemplating installing a swimming pool remember there
are many types of pools available, some more
environmentally and economically friendly than others.
Some are cheaper to install, but more expensive to
maintain, others are more expensive to install though
have lower maintenance costs and others are completely
mobile. (see types of swimming
pools available).
There is no mistaking
swimming
pools are great fun, but they do have quite high running
costs, a fact which should be taken into consideration
when you are contemplating having a swimming pool
installed.
For example a 10 metre by four metre pool,
running on a Chlorine pump system can cost up
to 2,000€ per year to run. These costs include
electricity for the pump, which during the summer may
need to run for at least four hours a day, top-ups of
water (due to evaporation and usage), chemicals to
ensure the water is sufficiently oxygenated and to keep
nasty bacteria at bay and maintenance of the pool
structure itself.
These running costs of a swimming pool are
often overlooked by many people when they purchase
holiday or retirement homes abroad. Unfortunately
swimming pools, though enjoyable during the summer
months, do require year round maintenance, which can eat
into a limited budget. Properties with bore holes or
wells are popular with many people as it reduces the
running costs as aside from a little electricity to
operate the water is free.
One of the main points to remember
however if you are considering installing a swimming
pool is a license for installation. Current legislation
in Portugal insists, as it will be a permanent fixture,
a license must be sought from the local council. Some
swimming pool manufacturers and builders will obtain
this on your behalf, however it is important you double
check this before any building work commences as it will
be the home owner who is fined if the license is not in
place not the contractor.
