In Portugal all vehicles over the age of four years are required by law to be tested for road worthiness.

The vehicle test, Inspecção Periódica Obrigatória, or IPO, is similar to the MOT in the United Kingdom and must be carried out at an approved test centre.

There are accredited vehicle test centres throughout Portugal and are usually located within industrial zones (zona industrials) or towns.
