Vehicle Testing in Portugal (IPO) |
|
All vehicles over the age of four years old are required by law to be tested for road worthiness. The test Inspecção Periódica Obrigatória or IPO, is similar to the MOT in the United Kingdom and must be carried out at an approved test centre. There are accredited test centres throughout Portugal and are usually located within industrial zones (zona industrials) or towns. For cars aged between four and seven years they must be tested every two years and afterwards once annually. The test centre will request the vehicle ownership document (Titulo de Registo de Propriedade), the logbook for the car (Livrete) and the registered owner's taxpayers identification card before the test is carried out. Once the vehicle has undergone the inspection a certificate will be issued, confirming whether the vehicle has either passed or failed. |
