If you
enjoy splashing about in the water, then you will be
spoiled for choice when visiting
Portugal.
There
are a huge range of
water sport activities
on offer in
Portugal
up and down the country, both inland and coastal, which
can be enjoyed throughout the year thanks to the
country's
temperate climate.
It is as you would perhaps expect from a country with a 1,793 kilometre
coastline, over 25 man-made and natural lakes and 21 rivers,
leisure pursuits involving water are readily on offer in
Portugal.

The list

canoeing,
fishing,
kayaking, kite surfing, sailing,
scuba diving,
surfing,
swimming,
wakeboarding, water-skiing and yachting.
And
although you may not be able to fit all the equipment
you need to enjoy some of these sports into your luggage
at the airport, you needn't worry. There are hundreds of
specialist companies who provide tailor made packages

you are visiting
Portugal
for a long weekend you can
still take part in your preferred pursuit relatively
inexpensively and easily. |

If
you're keen to take a canoe on the Rios Douro, Minho,
Mondego,
Zêzere, Sado,
Tagus and even
Nabão you can rest
easy this is easy enough to do. As well as outward bound
companies who offer safari-like trips you can also hire
canoes and kayaks at most of Portugal's reservoirs on an
hourly or daily basis.
Fishermen will be keen
to know it is also possible to cast a line or two when
in
Portugal, though you will need to purchase a fishing license
before you can grab your bait bag and head off for the
shores of a river, lake or even the open sea.
If you're coming to
Portugal
on an organised fishing trip the company you
have booked with will no doubt have already made
arrangements for you. If you prefer the peace and quite
though of fishing alone you will need to call into the
local tackle shop and procure the relevant license,
which is quick and cheap to do. |

Swimmers are well
catered for in
Portugal with hundreds if not thousands
of open air swimming pools and lidos throughout the
country. The majority of these facilities are run by the
local councils which do offer high levels of safety and
water quality.
If you like a little motorised activity while you are in
the water then please note although you can operate
motor and speed boats as well as jet skis on the
reservoirs in
Portugal
these will need to be powered by
four stroke engines to reduce the pollution to the
water. Boats or jet skis with two stroke engines are
banned from the reservoirs in Portugal. |
