weather in portugal

The weather in Portugal varies from region to region and has distinct seasons like the rest of Europe. However generally mainland Portugal does not experience winters as severe as more northerly European countries.

The seasons of the year are defined and you can expect the temperatures in mainland Portugal to be between 7 and 12 degrees Celsius during the winter months (though this does vary depending upon altitude).

During winter in Portugal there will be periods when frost is on the ground, though the ice quickly dissipates when the sun appears. Generally the only snowfall experienced in Portugal is on it's highest peaks, namely the Serra da Estrela mountains, home to the country's only skiing resort. The skiing season is short compared to other European countries and usually lasts from the end of January through to the beginning of March. In extreme winters snow has fallen in more low lying areas though these occasions are few and far between.

Spring in Portugal is a colourful time. It is a time when fruit trees blossom and the countryside is alive with activity, preparing the land for planting. Spring in Portugal is also a time for fun and frivolity with Carnival in February. The days are warm and sunny, though prone to rain until May. The rains during autumn, winter and spring in Portugal ensure the majority of the country remains green and lush.

Summer in Portugal can be hot with average temperatures in the mid to late 30 degrees Celsius. Summer days are hot and long in Portugal and during the peak of the day it is advisable to stay out of the sun to avoid feeling ill.

Portuguese summers can be hot and due to the temperatures the country seeking out any kind of shade becomes a national past time during the months from July through to September. You may notice vehicles abandoned beneath trees and old ladies sheltering beneath makeshift hats and you would be wise to follow suit.

Summer in Portugal though is about holidays and during the month of August you will find Portugal does tend to grind to a halt for 15 days during the holiday season as everyone heads for the beach to take advantage of the weather.

Autumn in Portugal is a cooler period and also an enjoyable time with many of the country's rural festas taking place during September and October. The nights do begin to draw in and temperatures once the sun disappears does tend to drop several degrees. Average temperatures for autumn are in the mid 20 degrees Celsius.
