Through
the years many famous authors and poets have spent
time in
Portugal utilising the laid back atmosphere and
geniality from their hosts to put their thoughts onto
paper. Notable among these are the romantic Poet
Lord
Byron, who was a frequent visitor to
Sintra.
Award
winning crime writer Robert
Wilson also found Sintra the perfect
place to perfect his prose, basing two of his novels in
Portugal. As his novels grew in popularity so did the
number of visitors to his adopted town and he and his
family have since moved inland to the Alentejo.
Nobel
prize winner Jose Saramago,
from the small central Portugal town of Azinhaga, wrote
countless novels and plays as well as for Portuguese
television.
World
famous author JK Rowling
lived in Northern Portugal, teaching English as a
foreign language, while she worked on the first draft of
her phenomenally successfully Harry Potter Trilogy.
Portugal
does offer the budding author the solace to write,
though there are many temptations to leave the manuscript
in the study, below we have highlighted a few new
published authors who have found the time to write when
they have lived in Portugal.
